The WSET Level 1 Award in Spirits is a one day in person, or 4 week online internationally recognized qualification intended for people looking for an introductory course in distilling, spirit tasting and cocktail making.
The course includes tasting and evaluating 10 different spirits, such as rum, vodka, gin, tequila, cognac and whiskies. It is designed to provide a sound but simple introduction to spirits and cocktail making. Aimed to assist those who need a basic familiarity with the main styles and categories, for example people who work with spirits in the retail and hospitality sectors. If you are taking the online course, samples of the recommended tastings will be sent out for you to try at home alongside the online classroom.
Successful candidates will be able to list the principal spirits categories, state their defining characteristics, and know the key principles involved in creating a perfectly balanced cocktail. You will confidently be able to answer customer queries and provide recommendations for spirits service.
Both online and in person include all recommended tastings.
The in-person course runs for the equivalent of one day with the exam scheduled at the end of teaching.
The online course runs for 4 weeks online and can be completed in your own time and at your own pace. Whilst 4 weeks of tutor supervision is provided, access to the course is avialable for 12 months from the start date. You will recieve all recommended tasting samples by post prior to the start of your course.
Please be aware enrollments for the online course close 1 week prior to the course commencing.
The course day will involve evaluation and tasting of spirits. Therefore, you must be of legal drinking age to enrol.
